Message from the Principal, Joe Gunty:
Dear Parents/Guardians,
As a way to celebrate and relax just six weeks before the beginning of the AP national exams, hundreds of AP students and teachers gathered during a lunchtime celebration to enjoy each other’s company and success in the Gym at Morton West. This lunchtime celebration was a recognition of all of the students’ hard work and dedication to academic success.
Morton West celebrates the climb in advanced placement enrollments and student achievement. Due to the targeted efforts of the Morton West community in District 201, more students are taking the AP challenge and preparing themselves for success in college.
According to State Superintendent Christopher A. Koch, “A record number of Illinois students are taking AP exams and posting successful scores according to the ninth annual AP Report to the Nation released last week. The number of Illinois graduates who take AP exams during high school more than doubled in the last decade, with low-income and minority students continuing to make record gains toward closing the achievement gap on these rigorous tests.”
Morton West can certainly boast its contribution to the state’s rising numbers.
Student enrollment in advanced placement courses at Morton West increased from 131 students in 2007 to over 700 students in 2013, an increase of over 500% in 6 years.
Student scores of 3 or better also increased from 79 in 2007 to 223 last year. This is a gain of nearly 300% and an outstanding achievement.
Sincerely,
Joe Gunty
Principal, Morton West
