Future Mustangs and Families Discover Opportunities at Morton West High School

Morton West and its Freshman Academy welcomed nearly 500 future Mustangs, along with their families and friends, for an engaging evening designed to introduce students to the wide range of opportunities available at the high school. The event offered families a firsthand look at campus life, academic pathways and the supportive environment that defines the Morton community. Throughout the evening, visitors toured classrooms, labs and common spaces while meeting teachers, counselors, coaches and student leaders. Information tables highlighted college and career readiness programs, honors and Advanced Placement coursework, fine arts, athletics and clubs, giving families a comprehensive overview of how students can explore interests and prepare for life beyond high school. A central focus of the night was the Freshman Academy, which supports ninth-grade students as they transition from middle school. Families learned how the academy emphasizes organization, relationship-building and academic confidence during a critical first year. School Board member Sandra Tomschin said the event underscored the district’s commitment to student success. “This night gives families a clear picture of how Morton West supports students academically and personally,” Tomschin said. “We want every student to feel welcomed, challenged and prepared for what comes next.” The event also created space for conversation, allowing families to ask questions, connect directly with staff and begin building relationships before the school year begins.

The performances highlighted both cultural pride and student talent, drawing applause from families and neighbors alike.
In addition to music and dance, attendees enjoyed traditional foods, including tamales and papelón con limón, while taking part in seasonal activities rooted in Posada traditions. The event offered an opportunity for families to gather, connect and celebrate together in a welcoming environment. School Board Secretary Jessica Jaramillo-Flores praised the event’s impact. “This Posada shows what Morton East does best — bringing people together through culture, creativity and community. Morton East and Morton West Bring Festive Cheer Through Music

The Morton East and Morton West music departments concluded a week of winter and holiday concerts that highlighted student talent, collaboration and seasonal spirit across the district.

Held on both campuses, the concerts featured bands, choirs and ensembles representing multiple grade levels. Students performed a wide range of selections, demonstrating technical growth and artistic confidence developed throughout the semester. Families, friends and community members filled the auditoriums, creating a warm and supportive atmosphere for the performers.

The concerts served not only as a celebration of the season but also as a showcase of the dedication students and staff bring to music education. For many students, the performances marked an important milestone in their development as musicians and leaders.

School board member Fernando Godinez praised the students and educators for their commitment. “These concerts reflect the discipline, creativity and teamwork that our music programs cultivate throughout the year,” Godinez said. “Seeing our students perform with such confidence and pride shows the impact of strong arts education and community support.”

The events closed the semester on a high note, reinforcing music’s role in connecting schools and community.
